about

Following the success of Special Touch - Garden of Life, Heels & Souls Recordings kick off their 12” reissue series with an EP of digger delights from Frankfurt’s under the radar production trio of Manfred Holz, Michael Buchner and Jürgen Blömke. Operating under two different aliases, on the A is The Soundstealers’ revered '80s electro nugget, 'Steal It An Deal It'. The flip brings to light the obscure acid chugger ‘Amazonia’, complete with a balearic rework from London’s tropical twosome Good Block.

It's 1988, Frankfurt's dance music scene is bubbling up and three mid 20's music lovers, Manfred Holz, Michael Buchner and Jürgen Blömke have been sharpening their studio craft. After a few early productions forays, they let loose ‘Steal It An Deal It’ as The Soundstealers. Cruisin the slow lane at 100BPM, an idiosyncratic blend of samples, sound effects and percussive flourishes, underpinned by chest rumbling bassweight, guarantees dancefloor bedlam whether drawing for the dance or dub mix.

Listen closely to the lyrics and The Soundstealers are making light of their namesake, during a time when sampling was revolutionising the music industry and major labels were getting wise to the game. To avoid any lawsuits, friends and fellow Frankfurt musicians contributed copycat vocals to the record. For instance the Janet Jackson ‘Nasty Boy…’ line was actually sung by Linda Rocco of Milli Vanilli fame.

With an infectious, tongue in cheek brilliance, ‘Steal It An Deal It’ ended up becoming Holz, Buchner and Blömke’s first major label signing before burying itself into the wantlist of many a digger.

Fast forward to 1993, and along comes German nature documentary ‘Wunder Wildnis’, looking for theme music for their Amazon rainforest series. The three rustle up 'Amazonia', surely one of the most underground chuggers to be made for an opening credits. The breakbeat-driven dance mix stomps through the undergrowth, acidic arps and pan flutes fizzing across the forest canopy.

Heels & Souls pass the baton to Good Block for the home stretch. With the original material and stacks of samples at their disposal, the guys conjured up a hypnotic remix, reworking the bassline and sprinkling some synth wizardry for a remix that grooves off over the horizon.

These hard-to-find, pricey gems have been fully licensed from the trio, with weighty remasters courtesy of Cicely Balston. 20% of profits from Heels & Souls Recordings and Prime Direct Distribution will be donated to Papyrus, a UK charity dedicated to the prevention of young suicide.

“We are super happy that our track ‘Steal it and Deal it’ became kind of a cult on the dancefloors and that now, more than 30 years after the first release, the Soundstealers will be released at Heels & Souls Recordings. Adding the track ‘Amazonia’ to it with a new remix of the Good Block guys rounds it up perfectly! Thanks a lot guys, let's rock the dancefloor once again !! ;-)”
